The hydrofoil Kriola will be handed over to its owners, Cabo Verde Fast Ferry, today, November 26. The first of two high-speed vessels built in Singapore, the boat is scheduled to arrive in Cape Verde between December 25 and 29, three days after which it will make its maiden Praia-Fogo-Brava voyage.
By early January 2011, Cape Verde its first modern high-speed watergoing vessel plying the waters between the islands of Santiago, Fogo, Brava and Maio. The hydrofoil, Kriola, was built at the Dutch.owned Damen Shipyard in Singapore.
According to the vice-president of Cabe Verde Fast Ferry's board of directors, Nelson Gregor, the ferry will be officially handed over to the company this weekend, and on Monday will be sent off to Cape Verde on a large shipping vessel. Gregor explains that the ship will be accompanied by a helicopter during part of the trip for security and other reasons.
Cabo Verde Fast Ferry believes that the trip should take between 29 and 30 days, depending on navigability conditions. As such, Kriola should arrive in Cape Verde between December 25 and 29 and begin operating in the first days of January. The vessel is being anxiously awaited in Cape Verde, particularly on the islands of Fogo, Brava and Maio, which are particularly affected by the lack of reliable and regular transportation.
The inaugural voyage by the hydrofoil will likely be marked by a great deal of pomp and circumstance. Among other reasons, the enterprise marks the first time Cape Verdean entrepreneurs residing abroad and in Cape Verde joined forces to promote a large-scale enterprise aimed at benefiting the country.
"Within two or three days after the Kriola's arrival, we intend to carry out its maiden voyage from Santiago to Fogo and Brava. In the main city on each of these three islands, different acts will be held to mark the beginning of operations of Fast Ferry's first high-speed vessel", says Nelson Gregor, who adds that on December 1, the company will announce the prices to be practiced for tickets and cargo transportation.
The businessman stressed that since 1 December, to announce the Fast Ferry fare that will perform for different types of passenger and cargo. Gregor Nelson adds that the company is now selecting 70 members to its staff, following a public tender held for this purpose which was attended by 1,300 candidates. Those chosen must integrate the various administrative departments of the ship and crew CVFF Kriola and Freedom. Rather, it will undergo special training. On the heels of the Kriola, Cabo Verde Fast Ferry's second high-speed vessel, the Liberdadi, will arrive between April and May of 2011 to link the Windward Islands. The vessels have a 158-passenger capacity and are able to transport up to 20 light vehicles and three trucks.
