Day 1 in Praia
Monday 17th March 2014
Breakfast at the Santa Maria was continental with the added extra of scrambled eggs and potato cubes. The breakfast area is very pleasant and overlooks the pedestrian area on the ground floor next to reception. Because our flight to Maio leaves on Tuesday (last year it was Mondays) we now have the whole day to explore. Since our first visit to Praia in 2008 we have noticed some positive changes to the Plateau. Some shop fronts have opened up with display windows, so they don't look like someone's front room. The pedestrianised area has seating, ornamental trees, lighting and stalls displaying crafts and home-made jams. Some gift shops are even using bar codes at the tills.
We had intended to take a tour of the Cidade Velha but instead wandered leisurely around the Plateau looking at the military barracks' display of cannons, reading our Kindles and eating ice cream in Albuquerque Square.
Day 2 in Praia
Tuesday 18th March 2014
Up with the lark. We took a little walk before breakfast, yet another lovely day. Forgot to say that although the hotel says it has free wi-fi, this refused to work on any of our devices!
Our internet ticket, which we printed off a couple of months ago, informed us that the Maio flight from Praia was at 11:55. We thought it would be wise to ask the hotel reception to confirm this for us. Luckily for us they did because TACV have brought the flight forward to 10:50. Another €10 taxi later and we are at the airport for 09:15. We managed to check in our luggage straight away and entered the departure lounge at 10:10. The time is now 11:15 and still no sign of our plane!!
I would hate to think of all of the countless hours we have spent waiting around in airports. At least this departure lounge has air conditioning. I sound like I'm moaning but in reality this is much better than working!
We'll it is now 12:25 and we are finally sitting down on the plane. Last moan, I promise, no apologising from the airline at all! TACV have one objective and that is to satisfy all passengers by getting them to their destination on time, provided there isn't anything else more important or if there's a letter 'd' in the day of the week!
We're here on Maio.
Flight time 8 minutes and 39 seconds. Benvindo our favourite taxi driver was at the airport to pick up other passengers. He took us to our bungalow which cost 1,000 escudos, we usually give him 500 but we did have a lot of luggage this time.
Our bungalow needed a good sweep around the patio and windows before we could relax. I must say that it will be great when the whole site is up and running and a cleaning staff are available to hire. However it took the two of us about an hour to make the bungalow habitable again.
We took the short walk over to the Casa Blanca supermarket to buy provisions. The temperature is 28°C but the walk did us good.
